Winters Veil

A short time ago I was asked by Chris Poore and Alan Lesser of rock band Winters Veil to come up with a cover to cover piece of artwork for their debut album The Storm Awakens. I already knew Chris from a previous band Crimson Altar as I painted the cover for their album The Ghost Ship Sails, so it was good to work with him again, and with Alan too. The guys had definite ideas of what they wanted so it made my job a lot easier I must say.

The Album is already available for download, with the CD due to come out very soon. I definitely recomend you checkout their site and have a listen to some great tracks.

Perspective and Staircases

QA for ImagineFX Magazine

Checkout this months edition of ImagineFX magazine (issue 79). There’s a really interesting piece on Wayne Barlowe that I highly recommend, quite surreal!

If you’re interested in gaming theres some interesting concept work for Batman Arkham Asylumn thats well worth taking a look at.

However I reserve the best to last, make sure you get to see the excellent sketches by John Howe an artist who’s work I greatly admire. Oh and did I mention that I have two Q&A sections in this months edition?

One of the QA’s you might recognise if you’ve looked through my gallery before. I’ve changed my colourful sunset for the QA article and given it more of a fantasy theme. The other QA is a new sketch that I made in artrage for a three step explanation of how to paint decaying flowers.

As always I am really honored to have my words and pictures featured in ImagineFX magazine, but more than all I recommend it as a quality publication for all lovers of the digital fantastic!

I have again been fortunate to write in the QA columns of ImagineFX magazine. This month I provide a three-step answer on painting feet! Halfling feet in fact, it was quite an interesting question from a reader and one I was happy to answer. I also covered the subject of colour from greyscale using one of my existing works ‘dragon Lord’ as the main illustration. Fortunately I had archived the original greyscale version so it was a perfect example for the answer I gave to the readers.

As always these were fun to do and as ever the magazine is fun and informative to read. There are some great paintings and articles on art nouveau and in particular the works of Mucha that I’d highly recommend taking a look at. ImagineFX issue 78 is still available at the newsagents, so go buy today!

The Hobbit

This was the second of the two cards I produced for Fantasy Flight Games Lord of the Rings living card games. It depicts a dry river bed in the heart of Mirkwood forest, a location more prominent in the Hobbit than the Lord of Rings. It’s part of the encounter set titled ‘Return to Mirkwood’ if there are any LOTR card gamers interested.

It’s quite something being able to illustrate scenes from Middle-Earth. I would happily paint from Tolkiens stories all day if I could! I have always loved the way Tolkien described the scenery of Middle-Earth It has become very vivid in my minds eye, which makes it quite easy to depict from my point of view.

The Lord of the Rings

Quite recently I was very lucky to get the opportunity to paint a few cards for the Fantasy Flight Games’s The Lord of the Rings; the card game. As I’ve always had an interest in the books of J. R. R. Tolkien I was more than happy to do so!

Since this card ‘The Highlands’ is in publication I’ve added a smaller copy of the original image to my gallery, which you can view right here on my blog.

The scene depicts a daunting view of the Emyn Muil and is appropriately part of the encounter set – The hills of Emyn Muil (available from Fantasy Flight Games).

The lord of the rings is a special trilogy for me, I first read it when I was around elven/twelve years old. Unfortunately I am not a fan of the Peter Jackson films but that does not diminish my love of the works of other artists who have interprited Tolkien themselves.

Game of Thrones

I recently managed to watch the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. It was a real pleasure to watch a TV show that follows in the spirit of the original books by George R. R. Martin, especially after the personal disappointment of the antipodean Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Great locations, excellent acting especially from Sean Bean as Eddard Stark and Charles Dance as Tywin Lannister , also worth mentioning that Peter Dinklage does a good job as Tyrion Lannister. There are lots of great performances in the show just too many to list here!

It reminded me of the Game of Thrones artwork I did for Fantasy Flight Games quite a while back. I’ve never played with collectable card games so I don’t really understand them to be honest, but having the chance to illustrate from something you’ve read is quite a frill. My own personal favorite from the bunch was the very first one I did for Fantasy Flight Games called Summer. I enjoyed doing that one the most.

Now I’m looking forward to the second season of Game of Thrones, I really do hope that HBO keep up the excellent work they’ve done with the series so far..

Not too long ago a friend of mine asked me if I could do something for what he called a “Reem” Party! He told me what he was looking for and I created a painting of a dancing girl for him to use for his companies marketing.

It so happens that my friend works for the Sugar Hut Village night club in Brentwood Essex, and the very same club is heavily featured on the ITV show “The only way is Essex” a pseudo reality program.

I’ve never actually watched the program, but I’ve heard enough about it to ensure that I continue on that course! However I wont object if my picture appears on TV sometime (someone will have to tell me if it does).

Bill Corbett’s artwork on TV! That hasn’t happened since Blue Peter in 1978!! Shutuuuuppppp!!!
